IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Scout Projects

In the fall of 2009, Joel Barlow High School student, Kyle Robey, completed an outstanding Eagle Scout project on the farm.
If you head down past the pond, on the southwestern edge of the marsh you will discover a 12’ X 12’ sphagnum bog. Kyle and his teams spent weeks transforming a tussock-filled area into an incredible outdoor classroom. As you make your way around the beautifully constructed cedar walkway you will be introduced to the fascinating world of carnivorous plants. Kyle and the scouts planted the bog with native pitcher plants and a wide variety of native sundews. If you look closely you can observe insects that have been captured in the bowls of the pitcher plants and others trapped in the sticky filaments of the sundews. All plants have been thoughtfully identified.
We are thrilled with this addition to our wetlands and thankful to Kyle and his team for their perseverance—this was certainly a complex and labor intensive Eagle Scout project, and will go on record as being the muddiest one in our history (!) but it shall be enjoyed for many years to come!
