The Education Center is home to many traditional New England farm animals. Members of our
dairy herd represent five breeds, our flock of
sheep is made up of Romney or Romney/East Friesian crosses and Icelandic ewes and lambs. Our flock of fifty
laying hens includes Buff Orpingtons, Blackstars, and Rhode Island Reds.
During the wintertime the cows, calves, and sheep are up by the main barn and barnyard. In the warm weather, the cows may be found grazing in the pastures between the afternoon and morning milkings, coming up to the single-storied freestall barn with the large cattle fan during the heat of the day. During the growing season, the sheep may be found grazing out on Astronomy Hill.
If you visit the
Learning Center on the hill you can meet a variety of interesting
reptiles that are featured in some of our birthday parties and animal adaptation programs.
New Pond Farm is also home to several colonies of honey bees. You may see the hives located in our pastures or along the farm road. Between May and September the downstairs classroom of the Learning Center features our observation beehive, where you can see the inner workings of a colony. The bees living in the observation hive enter and exit through an opening in the north facing wall of the center. Learn about our
Adopt a Hive program.
